OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking feature in ChatGPT, introducing group chats to enhance collaborative efforts among users. This new functionality allows individuals to form dedicated group chats for specific tasks, ensuring that personal ChatGPT memories remain private and secure.

Imagine planning a weekend trip with friends; users can now create a group chat where ChatGPT assists in comparing travel destinations, organizing itineraries, and compiling packing lists, all while keeping everyone in the loop. To start a group chat, users simply click the people icon located in the top right corner of a new or existing chat. This action duplicates the conversation into a new group chat, preserving the original chat's content.

Users can invite others by sharing a link, with the group accommodating up to twenty participants, who can further extend invitations. New members can personalize their group chat profile by adding a name, username, and photo. Similar to other messaging apps, users can be added or removed, and the group chat can be named or muted as desired.

Enhanced Interactivity and Rollout

OpenAI has boosted ChatGPT's interactivity within group chats, allowing it to subtly observe discussions and determine the best moments to contribute. Users can prompt ChatGPT to respond by mentioning "ChatGPT" in their messages. Furthermore, ChatGPT can react to messages with emojis and utilize profile photos to create personalized images upon request.

The group chat feature is currently being introduced on both web and mobile platforms for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro subscribers in select regions, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. OpenAI aims to collect early user feedback to fine-tune the feature before expanding its availability to more tiers and regions.
